Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Photography has become a powerful medium for promoting indigenous attire, showcasing the beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural significance of traditional clothing. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, photographers play a critical role in documenting and celebrating the region’s rich heritage of indigenous attire. Through fashion shoots, cultural festivals, and social media campaigns, photography not only preserves traditional designs but also inspires their modern adaptation. According to Ahmed and Musa (2023), photography serves as a bridge between tradition and contemporary fashion, creating a platform for cultural expression and economic empowerment. However, the extent to which photography promotes indigenous attire in Zaria remains underexplored, particularly in the context of globalization and cultural homogenization. This study examines the role of photography in promoting indigenous attire, focusing on its contributions, challenges, and implications for cultural preservation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential of photography to promote indigenous attire, its impact in Zaria is limited by challenges such as the dominance of Western fashion, limited access to professional photographers, and the lack of platforms for showcasing traditional designs. These issues hinder the ability of photography to effectively celebrate and promote indigenous attire. While studies have explored the role of media in cultural preservation, limited research focuses specifically on photography in Zaria (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). This study addresses this gap by evaluating the role of photography in promoting indigenous attire.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it underscores the importance of photography in preserving and promoting indigenous attire, offering valuable insights for photographers, designers, and cultural custodians in Zaria. The findings contribute to academic literature on cultural preservation, emphasizing the role of visual media in fostering cultural pride and economic empowerment. Additionally, the study provides practical recommendations for overcoming challenges and enhancing the promotion of indigenous attire through photography.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of photography in promoting indigenous attire in Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State. It excludes other forms of cultural promotion and focuses specifically on photography. Limitations may include variations in cultural practices and access to photographic content.
